Jewish Virtual Film Club
February 4, 2023
Please join our discussion on Zoom, Saturday Evening, February 4 at 7:00 PM!
We continue to discuss powerful movies that explore Jewish identity, interfaith relationships, and the challenges of acceptance. We look at films about friends, co-workers, family, and life partners. Films portray very different images (and stereotypes) of gentiles, assimilation, and the importance of Jewish identity.
February film: Wallenberg: A Hero’s Story
IMPORTANT: Watch this film on your own before our meeting.
Raoul Wallenberg (b. 1912) was a Swedish diplomat who saved the lives of tens of thousands of Jews in Budapest in the second half of 1944. Wallenberg saved Jews through a variety of means—by issuing protective documents, by establishing protected houses, and by securing their release from deportation trains, death march convoys, and labor service brigades—all at significant risk to himself. (United States Holocaust Memorial Museum)
Wallenberg: A Hero’s Story (1985) 3 hours, 8 minutes
Eight years before “Schindler’s List”, the riveting story of Raoul Wallenberg’s humanitarian and dangerous mission to rescue Hungary’s Jews was presented on NBC as a two-part miniseries. It won four Emmy Awards and was nominated for five more. Richard Chamberlain stars as Wallenberg and leads an outstanding international cast.
