January Virtual Film Club

Please join our discussion on Zoom, Saturday Evening, January 7 at 7:00 PM!

Season Three!  We continue to discuss powerful movies that explore Jewish identity, interfaith relationships, and the challenges of acceptance.  We look at films about friends, co-workers, family, and life partners.  Films portray very different images (and stereotypes) of gentiles, assimilation, and the importance of Jewish identity.

Chanukah Celebration   In our opening segment, we’ll explore the upsurge in Chanukah films, including Menorah in the Middle (Hulu), Mistletoe and Menorahs (Hulu, streaming rentals), Hanukkah on Rye (Hallmark Channel), and your other favorites.   We’ll focus on the genre, not a specific movie, so don’t try to watch them all!

January’s feature film:  Maktub, the Israeli blockbuster comedy on Netflix

IMPORTANT: Watch this film on your own before our meeting.

Maktub  (2018)  Hebrew, with English Subtitles (Only on Netflix)

Scoring 100% with critics on Rotten Tomatoes,  this story follows two criminals who change their ways after surviving a terrorist attack in Jerusalem, ascribed to Fate (the Arabic term “Maktub”).  They fulfill strangers’ wishes by answering their prayers left at the Wailing Wall.   Expect “a few fairly graphic moments that remind us criminal violence is no joke.” (Variety)

Maktub won Audience awards at the Monte-Carlo Comedy Film Festival, the Paim Springs International Film Festival, and the Sarasota Film Festival.

Our club meetings take place on Zoom, with details announced before each meeting
